Oggetto personale femminile di grande pregio, questi orecchini nella cultura del luogo possono essere ereditati alla morte della madre o regalati dal marito, il quale per procurarseli potrebbe anche dover vendere parte delle sue mandrie. Dote che resta alla donna che li riceve, spesso sono molto pesanti e per questo costituiscono un bene facilmente monetizzabile in caso di bisogno.
I Fulani – nome dato a questo popolo dalle genti di lingua inglese, mentre per i francesi si chiamano Peul e loro stessi si definiscono Fulde – sono una popolazione nomade dell’Africa occidentale, che vive di allevamento di bestiame e scambi commerciali; per questo è frequente trovare incise sugli orecchini delle decorazioni con motivi di animali o floreali, per indicare anche l’importanza e la ricchezza della famiglia di origine della donna che poi li indosserà.
Realizzati dagli orafi locali, vengono creati usando una barretta d’oro a 14 carati che, riscaldata e battuta, viene trasformata in sottili lamine alle quali vengono date le forme desiderate ripiegandole in diversi modi.
La parte in alto può essere rivestita di filo di lana rossa per salvaguardare l’orecchio, dato anche il loro peso.

Taken from the original model made in gold, this remake is faithful both in form and workmanship.
Object of great value, in the culture of the place these earrings can be inherited at the mother’s death or given to the woman by her husband, who may even need to sell part of their herds to get them. Dowry that remains with the woman who receives them, they are often very heavy and therefore constitute easy money in case of need.
The Fulani – a name given to them by the British, while the French call them Peul and they define themselves as Fulda – are a nomadic people in West Africa, living of animal husbandry and trade. It is common to have the earrings engraved with floral decorations or animals’ patterns, indicating the importance and wealth of the original family of the woman who wears them.
Made by local goldsmiths, they are created using a bar of 14 carat gold that, heated and beaten, is transformed into thin sheets which are then given the desired shape by folding them in different ways.
The top can be covered with a red woolen thread to protect the ear, since their weight in quite considerable.
