La leggenda del Claddagh narra che nel 16° secolo Richard Joyce da Claddagh, Co. Galway, era stato catturato dai pirati Moor e a loro asservito. Durante la prigionia è diventato un maestro del suo mestiere, Goldsmith (orafo). Con la sua maestria creo un anello unico per la donna che mai aveva potuto dimenticare a casa. Dopo otto anni fu liberato e tornato in Irlanda, per sua grande gioia, il cuore di lei era rimasto suo, e nulla avrebbe più potuto separarli nuovamente.
Il Claddagh Ring è un grande anello tradizionale di fidanzamento, conosciuto in tutto il mondo. Oggi è comunemente accettato come un simbolo che unendo le mani, il cuore e la corona, rappresenta un vincolo perpetuo di amicizia, amore e lealtà.
