Secondo diverse leggende, la lepre simboleggia la femminilità, la longevità e la rinascita e viene associata con il ciclo lunare.
Gli Anglosassoni rappresentavano Ostara, la dea della luna, della fertilità e della primavera, con una testa di lepre. Si dice che Eostere, la versione Celtica di questa Dea, fosse una muta-forma che si trasformava in lepre durante la luna piena.
Lepri e conigli erano considerati sacri dai Celti e venivano usati per la divinazione ed altre pratiche sciamaniche.
